One, Two or Three Days at Hluhluwe–iMfolozi: Choosing Your Safari

How much time should you set aside for a Hluhluwe safari from Durban? The answer depends on your holiday plans, how you feel about road travel and how much time you want to spend looking for wildlife.

I’m Paul, and I began guiding in September 2000. When helping guests choose a safari, I start with the time they have available and what they hope to experience. A well-chosen trip should fit your holiday comfortably.

Think about the rest of your holiday as well. If you have several days in Durban, there may be room to spend a night or two away. If your accommodation is already fixed, a day trip can be simpler. Let me know your plans before deciding, especially when your safari needs to fit around flights or a cruise.

One day: a safari without changing hotels

A one-day visit suits travellers staying in Durban who want to add a wildlife experience without packing up their accommodation. We collect you early, travel to Hluhluwe–iMfolozi and explore the reserve before returning to Durban.

The trade-off is a long day that includes the outward and return journeys. You still have the opportunity to enjoy Big Five country, but you need to be comfortable with an early start and time in the vehicle.

Two days: add the estuary and an overnight stay

The two-day safari combines St Lucia with Hluhluwe–iMfolozi and a night in the reserve, subject to accommodation availability. The estuary cruise adds a different perspective on wildlife before the safari continues inland.

An included open-vehicle sunset drive is another highlight. Dinner and breakfast are included; lunches are for your own account. Staying overnight also gives you the atmosphere of the bush after the day visitors have left.

Three days: make time for a full safari day

Three days gives you two nights and a full middle day devoted to wildlife viewing. You can choose separate morning and afternoon drives with a break between them, or a longer day exploring with a packed breakfast.

That extra time can suit guests who enjoy photography, watching animal behaviour or exploring different parts of the reserve. It also means the travel from Durban is spread across a longer experience. Accommodation is subject to availability, with breakfasts and dinners included and lunches excluded.

More time means more opportunities

A longer safari creates more opportunities to explore, but wildlife sightings cannot be promised on any duration. Tell me which animals interest you, while keeping an open mind about what the reserve offers on the day.
