A cruise stop in Durban or Richards Bay can be an opportunity to explore beyond the harbour and experience KwaZulu-Natal’s wildlife.
The starting point is your ship’s itinerary. Before recommending a safari, I need to understand how much time you actually have ashore.
1. Your ship’s name and visit date
Please send the name of your cruise ship and the date it visits Durban or Richards Bay. If your itinerary includes both ports, send the details for both stops.
A screenshot of the itinerary is helpful.
2. Arrival, departure and all-aboard times
A ship’s arrival time does not necessarily mean you can leave the terminal immediately.
Please include the published arrival and departure times, along with the all-aboard time if available. We can then discuss a realistic excursion, allowing for disembarkation, road travel and a return buffer.
3. Your group size
Tell me how many adults and children are travelling. For children, please include their ages so that we can discuss a suitable day and any activity requirements.
4. What you would most like to experience
Are you hoping for a Big Five safari, an estuary experience, or a shorter outing with wildlife and culture?
Tell me your priorities. The right excursion should suit both your interests and the time available in port.
5. Whether you are considering an overnight safari
If your ship calls at both Durban and Richards Bay, you may be interested in travelling overland between the ports with an overnight safari.
This needs careful planning. Before booking, you must confirm with your cruise line that leaving at one port and rejoining at another is permitted, and check any applicable immigration arrangements.
An overnight safari is only suitable when the ship’s itinerary and permissions allow it.
Let’s plan around your cruise
I’m Paul, and I’ve been guiding since September 2000. Send me your ship details, port times and group size, and I can help you assess the available options.
