Sani Pass & Lesotho Day Tour Itinerary
- 6:00 AM – Pickup from Durban
- Your day begins with collection from your hotel or accommodation in Durban and surrounding areas. We leave early to make the most of the day ahead.
- Journey through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
- We travel west from Durban towards the Southern Drakensberg, passing through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and farming areas on our way to Underberg and Himeville. The journey takes approximately three hours and gives us a chance to enjoy the changing scenery as we leave the coast and approach the mountains.
- Transfer to a 4×4 Vehicle
- In the Himeville area, we continue the adventure in a 4×4 vehicle specially suited to the mountain roads ahead. From here, we make our way towards Sani Pass and the South African border post.
- Climb the Sani Pass
- After completing border formalities, we begin the spectacular climb up Sani Pass. The approximately 13-kilometre section between the South African and Lesotho border posts is steep, rugged and bumpy — all part of the Sani Pass experience. We take our time, stopping at viewpoints along the way to enjoy the scenery and take photographs.
- Cross into Lesotho
- At the top of Sani Pass, we pass through Lesotho border control and enter the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The landscape and way of life change noticeably as we travel into the highlands.
- Visit a Basotho Village
- We visit a small local village where you’ll have an opportunity to meet local people, taste traditionally prepared bread and learn more about Basotho culture, everyday life and some of Lesotho’s history.
- Explore the Lesotho Highlands
- We continue farther into the mountains towards Black Mountain Pass, reaching approximately 3,240 metres (10,630 ft) above sea level. Depending on conditions, there is an opportunity for a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the spectacular surrounding highlands.
- Lunch Overlooking Sani Pass
- We return towards the top of Sani Pass for lunch at the famous Highest Pub in Africa, overlooking the pass and South Africa below. Lunch is for your own account.
- Descend Sani Pass
- After lunch, we begin our 4×4 journey back down Sani Pass, complete South African border formalities and return to the Himeville area.
- Return to Durban
- From Himeville, we begin the approximately three-hour journey back to Durban. We generally arrive back at your accommodation between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, depending on traffic, border formalities and how the day unfolds.

The Sani Pass is one of Southern Africa’s most spectacular mountain routes, climbing through the Drakensberg and connecting KwaZulu-Natal with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho.
The journey is very much part of the experience. As we leave Durban and travel inland, the landscape gradually changes from the coast to the farmlands of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands before the mountains of the Southern Drakensberg begin to dominate the horizon.
From Himeville, the real adventure begins as we change to a 4×4 vehicle and make our way towards Sani Pass. The road becomes increasingly rugged as it climbs through the mountains, with plenty of opportunities to stop, enjoy the views and photograph the surrounding landscape.
Eventually, the famous switchbacks take us towards the top of the escarpment and across the border into Lesotho.
From South Africa into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho
Crossing the border into Lesotho is one of the things that makes this day so different from an ordinary scenic tour.
Lesotho is a small independent country completely surrounded by South Africa, but once we cross the border the landscape, communities and way of life can feel remarkably different.
During our time in Lesotho, we’ll visit a small Basotho village, taste traditionally prepared bread and learn something about the people, history and culture of the country.
We also travel farther into the highlands towards Black Mountain Pass, reaching approximately 3,240 metres (10,630 ft) above sea level. At these elevations, the mountain scenery can be spectacular and the weather can change quickly — sometimes adding another dimension to the experience.
More Than Just a Mountain Drive
For me, this tour isn’t simply about driving up Sani Pass, taking a photograph at the top and driving back down again.
The journey gives us an opportunity to experience how the landscape and communities change as we travel from Durban, through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and Drakensberg, and finally across an international border into Lesotho.
There are stories to tell along the way, viewpoints worth stopping at and opportunities to learn something about a part of Southern Africa that is very different from the coast where our day began.
And because the tour is not run according to a rigid minute-by-minute timetable, we can enjoy the experience at a comfortable pace and adapt where necessary as the day unfolds.

Lunch is not included in the tour price. We normally stop for lunch near the top of Sani Pass, where you can enjoy the spectacular mountain views. We’ll explain the lunch arrangements when you book.
How long is the Sani Pass tour from Durban?
This is a full-day tour. We normally collect guests from Durban at approximately 6:00 AM and return at around 6:00–7:00 PM. Return times are approximate and can vary depending on border formalities, road conditions and how the day unfolds.
