Yes—a one-day safari from Durban gives you the opportunity to explore Hluhluwe–iMfolozi without changing hotels or adding an overnight stay to your holiday.
It is a full day with an early start, so it suits visitors who are happy to spend time travelling in exchange for a wildlife experience beyond the city.
How does the day work?
We arrange collection from your Durban accommodation and travel north to the reserve. Once inside, the focus changes from getting somewhere to taking our time: watching the landscape, looking for wildlife and stopping when something catches our attention.
The route through the reserve depends on conditions and animal activity on the day. A safari is always an unfolding experience, rather than a fixed list of sightings.
Will you see all of the Big Five?
Hluhluwe–iMfolozi offers the opportunity to look for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. However, no responsible guide can promise that you will see every species during a visit.
Some of the most memorable moments involve animals you were not expecting, or simply watching their behaviour without rushing on to the next sighting.
Is one day enough?
A day safari works well when you have limited time in Durban and want to include wildlife in your holiday.
If you would prefer more time in the bush, consider a two- or three-day safari. An overnight stay gives the journey a different rhythm and allows more time for wildlife viewing.
What should you bring?
Bring your camera, binoculars if you have them, a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start. Before departure, I will confirm your collection arrangements and the inclusions for your chosen tour.
I’m Paul, and I began guiding in September 2000. My approach is personal: help you understand what you are seeing, answer your questions and make the most of the day’s opportunities.
