One-Day Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Safari Itinerary
- 6:00 AM – Pickup from Durban
- Your safari begins with collection from your hotel or accommodation in Durban and surrounding areas. An earlier or later departure can sometimes be arranged, although I recommend an early start to make the most of our day. Guests can also ask their hotel to prepare a packed breakfast for the journey.
- Journey through KwaZulu-Natal to Zululand
- We travel north along the KwaZulu-Natal coast towards Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, a journey of approximately three hours. Along the way, the landscape changes from commercial sugarcane and forestry areas to the smaller communities and traditional homesteads of Zululand. The journey gives me an opportunity to share some of the history and culture of KwaZulu-Natal before we even reach the reserve.
- Arrive at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
- We usually enter through Memorial Gate in the northern Hluhluwe section, although our route can change depending on recent wildlife activity and conditions in the reserve. From here, our Big 5 safari begins.
- Morning Big 5 Safari
- We spend the morning exploring the reserve in search of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard and the many other species found here. There is no fixed route. I adapt our safari according to wildlife sightings, conditions and information shared between guides working in the reserve.
- Lunch Break
- We normally stop for lunch during the day, often at Hilltop Camp. Lunch is for your own account. Guests are also welcome to bring a packed picnic lunch, which can give us more time to continue exploring the reserve rather than having a longer restaurant stop.
- Afternoon Safari & Southern Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
- After lunch, we continue our safari, often taking a longer route through different areas of the reserve. Depending on the day, we may travel farther south where the habitat changes and we have opportunities to look for species such as giraffe and cheetah, as well as anything else we encounter along the way.
- Return to Durban
- We generally leave the reserve during the late afternoon for the approximately three-hour journey back to Durban. Return is normally between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, although safari days are never completely predictable and times can vary depending on wildlife sightings and how the day unfolds.
Experience Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park from Durban
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is one of South Africa’s oldest and best-known game reserves and offers one of the closest opportunities to experience a genuine Big 5 safari from Durban.
The reserve covers a vast area of hills, valleys, rivers, grasslands and woodland, creating habitats for an incredible variety of wildlife. It is home to the Big 5 — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — as well as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, warthog and numerous antelope species.
But a safari here isn’t simply about ticking animals off a list. Wildlife moves constantly, conditions change and no two days in the reserve are ever quite the same. Some days an elephant herd may keep us watching for half an hour; on another day it could be lions beside the road, rhinos grazing on a hillside or something completely unexpected.
That’s one of the things I still enjoy about guiding here. You never really know what the reserve is going to give you that day.
Big 5 Wildlife and Rhino Conservation
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is home to the Big 5 — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — as well as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, warthog and numerous species of antelope.
The reserve is particularly famous for its rhinos. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi played an important role in the conservation of the southern white rhino, and today seeing these magnificent animals in the wild remains one of the highlights of a safari here.
Wildlife is not evenly distributed throughout the reserve, and this is where experience becomes important. Different habitats and areas can be better for particular species, and our route can change depending on recent sightings and wildlife activity.
Of course, these are wild animals roaming freely in a large reserve, so no particular sighting — including any of the Big 5 — can ever be guaranteed.
More Than Just Finding the Big 5
For me, a good safari is about much more than racing around the reserve trying to tick five animals off a list.
When we find an interesting sighting, we can switch off the vehicle, spend some time watching and see what the animals are actually doing. Often it is their behaviour that makes a sighting memorable.
And it isn’t only about the large animals. Depending on what we encounter, we may talk about birds, insects, trees, grasses and some of the traditional uses of plants found in the area.
After many years of guiding, I still find there is always something new to see and learn in the African bush.

It is a long day, with an early start and approximately three hours of travelling in each direction, but it gives you the opportunity to experience one of South Africa’s most historic wildlife reserves and still return to your Durban accommodation that evening.
Your Private Guided Hluhluwe Safari
This is a private safari, so we don’t have to follow the timetable of a large scheduled group.
I adapt the day according to wildlife activity, conditions in the reserve and your interests. If we find something worth spending time with, we can stay and watch. If an area is quiet, we can move on and try somewhere else.
After around 16 years of guiding in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, I’ve learned that no two days here are the same. There is no perfect route that works every day — part of guiding is knowing the reserve, reading the conditions and making decisions as the safari unfolds.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but making the most of whatever the reserve gives us that day is always the aim.

What should I bring on the safari?
Bring comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and your camera or phone. A light jacket is useful for cool mornings, particularly during winter. We also recommend asking your hotel for a packed breakfast because of our early departure.
Do you collect guests from Durban hotels?
Yes. We collect guests from hotels and accommodation in Durban and surrounding areas and return you to your accommodation after the safari. If you’re staying farther outside our normal pickup area, please enquire and we can discuss the arrangements.
