Meet your guide

Paul Koekemoer beside an open safari vehicle in KwaZulu-Natal

Hi, I’m Paul Koekemoer, your guide and safari host. I have worked in tourism and guiding since 5 September 2000, when my first trip took me into Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

More than 26 years of guiding experience

My early career involved leading small-group adventure tours across Southern Africa. We travelled in a Volkswagen Kombi with camping and cooking equipment, visiting remote destinations and introducing guests to places such as the Okavango Delta. Those years taught me how to plan carefully, adapt when conditions change and make sure every guest feels comfortable and included.

I started my own tour business in 2005. Since then, I have guided in Kruger National Park for around six years and spent approximately sixteen years working in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park. I am a fully licensed South African tourist guide and now operate under the Durban Tours and Safaris name.

A personal approach to every tour

I personally guide most of our tours. My aim is not simply to drive from one attraction to another, but to help you understand the wildlife, landscapes, history and people of KwaZulu-Natal and Southern Africa. Our tours are designed for small private groups, allowing us to adjust the pace around your interests and the conditions on the day.

On the occasional tour when I am unavailable, I work only with experienced guides whom I know and trust. Whether you join us for a Big Five safari, a cultural day tour, Sani Pass or a longer journey, you should feel informed, relaxed and well looked after from pickup to drop-off.

Life beyond guiding

When I am not guiding, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, fishing, hiking and visiting wildlife reserves. After more than 26 years in tourism, I still enjoy every day in the bush because no two tours—and no two wildlife sightings—are ever the same.
